Anthony Hall Receives NFBPA’s Highest Award

The National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA) bestowed the organization’s highest honor upon Archon Anthony W. Hall, Jr., Chief Administrative Officer for the city of Houston during its national convention held April 25-29 in Oakland, California. The NFBPA is an organization of more than 2,600 members representing 350-plus local, state and federal jurisdictions. Its mission is to strengthen the position of African Americans within the field of public administration, increase the number of African Americans appointed to executive positions in public service organizations and to prepare younger, aspiring administrators for senior-level public management posts.

The NFBPA’s Marks of Excellence Award is presented to an African American public administrator who has achieved extraordinary success in the field of public management while demonstrating an unselfish commitment to the community. The recipient of this prestigious award must be an individual engaged in public administration who has performed acts of public service, which have been conspicuous in its benefit to the greater community, and who has exhibited exemplary leadership qualities that have inspired those associated with him to strive for excellence in performance and service.

Archon Hall said, “One of life’s highest honors is to be recognized by one’s peers in their professional endeavors. I am extremely honored by this recognition from my colleagues.”

“Anthony Hall’s wealth of knowledge has been a great value in this administration’s efforts to navigate the turbulent air of city hall politics,” said Mayor Bill White. “I am fortunate to have him as a colleague and a friend.”

Since the early 1970s, Archon Hall has been actively involved in local and state government and civic affairs and has gained substantial experience in public law. He has served as a state representative, Houston city councilmember, chairman of the board of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Houston city attorney and currently chief administrative officer for the city of Houston. Further, he was a shareholder in the law firm of Jackson Walker LLP for several years prior to being named city attorney by Mayor Lee P. Brown.

Additionally, Archon Hall serves on the board of directors of El Paso Corporation and Houston Endowment, Inc.

Serving the community is important to Archon Hall, as evidenced by his involvement with the United Negro College Fund (32 years; 17 as chair), Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas, Boy Scouts of America Advisory Board, The Ensemble Theatre Board of Directors, Houston Symphony Board of Trustees, The Boulé Foundation Board of Trustees (chair) and service on numerous other boards.

Archon Hall holds a B.A. in economics from Howard University and the J.D. cum laude from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. He and his wife Carolyn are the parents of two adult children, Ursula and Anthony III.
