New York, NY – November 27, 2007 – Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) announced that Virgis and Angela Colbert donated $400,000 to the Fund during the organization’s 20th Anniversary Dinner Gala held in New York City at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers on Monday, November 5th, 2007. Virgis Colbert is the former Executive Vice President of Worldwide Operations, at Miller Brewing Company and was the founding Chairman of the TMCF Board of Directors and currently serves on the board as Chairman Emeritus. The donation will support the annual Leadership Institute and the establishment the ”Virgis and Angela Colbert Scholarship” endowment.
“An investment in young people is indeed an investment in the future for all of us,” said Virgis Colbert, former Executive Vice President of Worldwide Operations, Miller Brewing Company. “We believe in this next generation, and we commit that we will continue to do all that we can to help dreams turn into reality.”
The Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s Awards Dinner Gala is an annual event, held during TMCF’s Annual Leadership Institute, in which the organization bestows its highest honors to individuals and companies who embody the legacy of Thurgood Marshall through their commitment to the Fund and its mission. Corporate Leadership Awards honoree, Miller Brewing Company matched the Colbert’s contribution by donating an additional $400,000 to the Fund toward the Leadership Institute and the /Virgis and Angela Colbert Scholarship/. The event is traditionally hosted by noted accomplished celebrities - most recent emcees included Angela Basset and Diahann Carroll. The 2007 gala was hosted by Terrence Howard, Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated actor.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund has awarded $68 million in scholarships and programmatic support enabling more than 6,000 students to attend at public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) since 1987. Representing 80% of the overall HBCU student population, TMCF’s 47 member colleges and universities are located in 22 states with a student population of well over 232,000.
